Peace Out Doug Marrone, loser

By Steve

No doubt it is shocking that Doug Marrone opted out of his contract but it isn't a big loss. The guy is a career loser. He was 25-25 at Syracuse and 15-17 in two years in Buffalo.

Quite clearly it was a dick off between him and Terry Pegula. He had $4 guaranteed even if he opted out for the 2015 season. He probably wanted Doug Whaley gone and to pick hiz personel man. Even PFT speculates this is the case..

"It’s also unclear whether and to what extent Marrone tried to parlay his Parcells-style cash-and-carry contract into an extension, a raise, more power, and/or the termination of certain members of the front office.  It’s possible Marrone went all in, the Pegulas called his bluff, and now he’s gone."

Pegula has to take a big swing. He basically pushed Marrone out and has unlimited money. Some of these loser wash outs thrown around lately will not suffice. Make Marrone regret this decision the rest of his life.

The Bills can and should be better. Leggggggo!

2014 NFL Rookie Wide Receiver Stats

by Steve

Well, of course, no one would ever use 2 first round picks on a wide receiver HAHAHA except the Bills.  True, that's not true, but with out a real quarterback?  Of course no one would use 2 first round picks and a 4th round pick on a player that depends on someone else to deliver the ball every time (Watkins had 2 rushes this season).

Here are the 2014 rookie wide receiver stats (not adjusted for quarterback):
(receptions, yards, TDs)

Sammy Watkins     65 982 6
Odell Beckham Jr  91 1305 12
Mike Evans           69 1051  12

Fire Russ Brandon

By Steve

Does anyone remember 1/1/2013 ? Granted there is a new owner and he may have some different thoughts but Terry Pegula has kept all the same people in place since that date so it still applies..

Well if you dont remember, here is what (then CEO) Russ Brandon said on that date:

This is an organization with a proud tradition, but I will tell you that this brand has been tarnished. Its relevancy has been tarnished and it is unacceptable because we just have not won enough games. As Buddy (Nix) says all the time, it is a production business. That is what we are in this for is to win games.
It is time to start, create and lead this franchise into the future with a new legacy. I make three promises to our fans. Number one, I can promise you that this will be a forward-thinking, progressive and attacking organization heading into the future. One of the items that I am going to spend a lot of time on with Buddy, with Doug Whaley and with Jim Overdorf is we are going to create and establish a very robust football analytics operation that we layer into our entire operation moving forward. That is something that is very important to me and very important to the future of this franchise.

I also will promise that anyone who knows me and has worked with me knows that I will leave no stone unturned in taking this organization to a world class level. My college coach used to say, I think Thomas Edison said this, my college coach used to say all of the time ‘You find me a satisfied man and I will show you a failure.’ The one thing about me and how we approach things is I am, and it probably is a little of a curse too and a blessing, but I am rarely satisfied. We will not sit on our hands until we take this to another level. That is certainly a promise that I provide our fans.
I will identify and I will hire world-class people to bring into this organization, but most importantly I will empower people to do their jobs.

I repeat  "forward-thinking, progressive and attacking organization heading into the future" in any world have the Bills been any of those things the last two years?

How about " with Doug Whaley and with Jim Overdorf we are going to create and establish a very robust football analytics operation that we layer into our entire operation moving forward" ? Has there been even one iota of analytics the last two years?

Are the Bills satisified with the failure of the past two seasons (to mix words)? In what way has this organization become world class?

Maybe two years isnt enough. Should the Bills fire Doug Marrone and Whaley? Depends who you are replacing them with but here is one god damn thing I know for sure. The Bills have to fire the man that has more or less run this organization the last 10 years (ever since Tom Donahoe was fired in 2005). Russ Brandon must be fired.

What has he done besides scam people into buying in literally and figuritively to his vision of the Buffalo Bills. There is no arguement for keeping him. He is a snake oil salesman. He is a failure and he is the man holding this organization back. Until then I see no real hope.

The Bills Are a Disaster

By Steve

Tricked again. What a surprise. I was on board and then Doug Marrone and his Buffalo Bills lose to the 2-12 Oakland Raiders with an interim head coach and a rookie QB. WTF? (Tony Sparano now 6-2 vs the Bills as a head coach)

The offense was abysmal and the defense gave up the 2nd most points the Raiders had all season and lost 26-24. How?

The season is and was a complete waste. There is no building off this season into next year. Defenses fluctuate from year to year. The head coach will be a lame duck. They have no QB, no first round pick and little if any hope.

I dont give a shit about beating a good team like the Packers or Lions if you cant win games you absolutely need to ala the Raiders and Chiefs. 4-0 against the NFC North? Who gives a shit when you go 0-4 against the much more important AFC West. Pathetic.

Firing Marrone is the easy answer but unless Pegula takes a monster swing and signs someone like Jim Harbaugh or Gus Malzahn whats the point? Then again even Chip Kelly coached like a loser this season.

Can I get a proven winner? Someone that actually thinks different than all these loser moron coaches that are scared for their lives and always punt? Did the Bills try even one trick play this year? Did they do anything to surprise anyone? Did anyone ever say the Bills out coached them ever?

Nate Hackett has to be fired one hundred percent no doubt about it. I dont care that the offensive line was horrid or Kyle Orton is a limited loser. Where is the originality? This offense is pathetic. 7 point favorites and you weren't even close to winning this must win game.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Losers. All of em.

Bills at Raiders Stat Preview

by Steve

The Bills roll out to Oakland in a must win game in the heat of a Wild Card battle looking for their first win in this god forsaken place since 1964.  The Bills are giving the most points I can recall ever (they're -7, over under is 39.5) on the road.  Clearly the Oakland Raiders are horrendous but this is the NFL where any given Sunday anyone can win (except the Bills at New England)

The Bills appear to be better than the Raiders in ever facet of the game.  They even have a better head coach which is god damn rare. Interim head coach Tony Sparano should be familiar to all Bills fans.  Wow, just looked it up, Sparano was 5-2 against the Bills in his career.  Holy shit!  The Dolphins were actually 6-2 against the Bills in his four seasons but he was fired the week before the Dolphins came to the Ralph and interim head coach Todd Bowles fuckin won.

This knowledge kinda scares me but it is still rookie Derek Carr vs one of if not these best defenses in the league.  Basically all the Bills have to do to win this game is have Kyle Orton throw zero touchdowns in the wrong direction and not fumble the ball out of the back of either endzone.

The Bills have to win this game and make next week at New England matter.  For christ's sake it can't be that difficult can it?  Doug Marrone has gotten his team up a few times this year when I feared they wouldn't get up (half time v Minny, Bills v Jets at Detroit and the second half v Cleveland).  So I shockingly have some faith in Marrone to have his team ready to trounce these losers.  Prediction at the bottom.

Week 16 Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After an epic victory over overrated Aaron Rodgers and the Packers where are the Bills ranked:

ESPN 15 :
"That's how you close out a season at home. The Bills have both remaining games on the road. It could be Buffalo's first season since 2004 with a positive point differential."

Point differential! Huh? A two spot jump not barely ahead of the Dolphins

CBS 15 :
"At 8-6, their playoff hopes are alive. Did they save coach Doug Marrone's job?"

Prisco still questioning Marrone's job stability? Love it, Three spot leap

Yahoo 14:
"(8-6, LW: 16)That was a great win against Green Bay, and this defense is incredible. The Bills might have to win in Week 17 at New England to get in the playoffs, but it's a testament to them that they're still in the conversation."

Oh, good defense!

NFL 13:
That was a pretty complete win delivered by the Bills on Sunday. Nothing fluky about it. Bacarri Rambo was something special. Rambo made a mockery of a small-town sheriff -- I mean, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense -- proving that nothing is over in Buffalo. You just don't turn it off, either. I fully expect that Bills defense to blow things up in Oakland and New England. # BillsMafia #ColonelTrautman

Wait what?  Did he just predict a win at the Patriots?

PFT  :
"14. Buffalo Bills (No. 17; 8-6):  They may not make the playoffs, but that signature win over the Packers could save Doug Marrone’s job."

Consensus that it was a big win for Marrone but maybe not his real estate agent

Packers at Bills Preview

by Steve

Week 15 and the Buffalo Bills are still sorta "in it" vis-a-vis the playoffs.  While that is shocking because the Bills are never in contention for the playoffs it still seems a bit hollow since the Bills chances of actually making the post season is low single digits.  Oh and the QB is a bum the coach is a bust and the Bills may not be favored again this season.

Luckily, the Bills get to play an overrated Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in Buffalo this Sunday.  The Green Bay Packers have never won a game in Buffalo. Granted, the Packers are much more successful than the Bills and have a far superior quarterback but I surprisingly feel pretty confident going into this game at the Ralph.

Yes, Rodgers only has 3 picks this season, is as athletic as any QB and straight slings the rock; but besides one lucky run a few years ago (in which Vick and the Eagles should have beat GB in the Wild Card game) the Packers don't win big games.  Maybe moron Mike McCarthy deserves most of that blame AND Doug Marrone is just as big of a moron but uhhh.  Oh yeah, the Bills defense is legit!  They are the nobody believes in us team!  Even Vegas is realizing this!  The line opened BUF +7 and it is currently down to 5.

As long as the Williams bros, Dareus and Hughes get in A-Rodg's face, don't get run over and Orton can score 27 points the Bills will win.  Or maybe I'm just biased because I never thought Rodgers was that good and he's killing it this year.  We'll see.  Oh and here is a break down of the stats for both teams:

Week 15 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings Compilation

Not dead can't quit, let's see where the media ranks the Bills after an L to the Broncos:

ESPN 17
No change "Kyle Orton tied the Bills' franchise record with 38 completions and threw for a season-high 355 yards Sunday. The 7-6 Bills will need that against the Packers and Pats."

Useless information on the highest order

CBS 18
"Any playoff chances went out the window with the loss at Denver. They need a quarterback."

Dropped 1 spot, one fact one fiction, thanks Pete.

NFL 17
"The Bills made it interesting in the end at Denver; in fact, they accumulated 285 yards of offense in just five second-half possessions. Of course, the Broncos had already jumped out to a 21-3 lead.

The bottom line is, this club is eventually going to have to enter the expectation phase, in which the Bills will actually be expected to beat a good team on the road as opposed to getting kudos for keeping it close. Not trying to be harsh; that's just what this pro game is all about."

PFT
17. Buffalo Bills (No. 15; 7-6):  Doug Marrone’s job could hinge on beating the Packers on Sunday.  If so, it may be time to start packing up the office."

Interesting, but I doubt its true

Yahoo 16
"It will be interesting to see if the Bills go back to EJ Manuel for a start or two if they're officially out of the race. If they don't, that probably tells you all you need to know about Manuel's future there."

No movement but a mention of Erik James? Damn, Orton really does suck.

Not much movement albeit everyone seems to agree the QB and the coach are squarely to blame and need to be switched out YET AGAINNNNN

Bills at Broncos Statistical Preview

by Steve

The Bills play one of the most important games in a decade this weekend when they visit the mighty Denver Broncos at 4:05 Sunday.  Do the Bills have a chance to win? Well I am getting a keg and watching the game at my house.. That plan worked for the Lions and Bears games where the Bills were big underdogs on the road.  Why not again this Sunday? Rams played em close, so did the Dolphins,  and it is the NFL after all isn't it?  Any Given Sunday?

Let's take a gander at the stats for these two teams:

Bills +10.5 over/under 48

Bills Offensive Rankings:

Total Plays: 19th
Yards per Game: 24th
Points per Game: 16th (22.2)
Turnovers: 5th (+9)

Week 14 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After an "important" win at home against the Browns and in the thick of a wild card race let's see where the national media has the Buffalo Bills:

ESPN 17 up 1
"While the world watched Johnny Manziel, Buffalo quietly won by 16 points. Though the Bills still play the Raiders, they will likely need to find two wins against the Broncos, Packers and Patriots"

A reality check with the Bills the second lowest ranked team of the 7-5 teams

CBS  17 up 1
"That defense will keep them in a lot of games. They are still alive for a playoff spot."

Insight!

NFL 15 up 3
"Big win for the Bills, who are riding the NFL's most underrated defense to a possible playoff spot. Now, it goes without saying that this head-to-head victory over the Browns looms large in the postseason push. The thinking here is that it will take 10 wins to get into the tournament on the AFC side. So, # BillsMafia, can Buffalo take three out of four vs. Denver, Green Bay, Oakland and New England -- with three of those four on the road? Are Andre Reed and Joe Cribbs still in football shape?""

WTF? Joe Cribbs? I don't think a 56 year old running back is what this team needs..

Yahoo 16 up 2
"The defense is really good. I just don’t see how they get into the playoffs, which is a shame."

If they are so good they should be able to compete with GB NE DEN!!

 PFT
15. Buffalo Bills (No. 18; 7-5): After two steps forward, the one step back comes in Denver this weekend.

Florio pulling no punches.

Bills 26 Browns 10 F

By Steve

Wait, the Bills actually took care of business at home for a change and gave us meaningful football in December? Holy shit.

Granted, it was ugly, actually realllly ugly at times but a win is a win is a win. So who deserves the credit? A quarterback and an offense that scored zero points in the first half? Sammy Watkins who was a nonfactor all day? Clearly the only people that get credit are the monsters on the defense killing fools.

From the front four to the linebackers and even a secondary that ball hawks and makes plays. This defense is legit. Im not sure if they have a weakness. Then again they do play against 3 of the best QBs in the league this month so we'll see. But against most teams in this league this defense shines.

How damn much is Jerry Hughes going to get in March? This guy is starting to change my mind into thinking he's worth paying. Dareus keeps adding zeros to his next contract and so is Nigel Bradham.

Just imagine if Bryce Brown doesn't fumble against the Chiefs and Scott Chandler doesn't have boners for hands! The Bills would be 8-4 and in the drivers seat in the wild card. But alas they aren't and will need a miracle four straight weeks in December to break a 14 year drought.

So they beat the Browns and did what they needed to do which with even those low standards is an upgrade over previous seasons. Marrone has almost certainly bought himself another season besting the teams he is supposed to win. But now its time to see how great this defense truly is against Manning, Rodgers and Brady.

No I still don't love Doug Marrone, Kyle average Orton or Natty daddy Hackett but at this point I'll take it. I mean they have given us something we havent had since 2004.. Meaningful football in December.

Bills Roll Over Terrible Jets 38-3

By Steve

The Bills now have the same number of victories in Ford Field in Detroit as they do in Orchard Park. They dismantled the lowly Jets in a game in which the final result was never in doubt.

Yes, I had the Jets winning the game and clearly I was wrong. The Jets were horrible. They didn't even show up. The Bills played well but this game was more about a horrible Rex Ryan coached team than Marrone, Orton and co.

Sorry but this game was borderline useless in the grand scheme of things but it was an impressive beat down. Orton made throws, the defense destroyed the Jets oline and Robert Woods was impressive.

WHY COULDNT THE BILLS HAVE JUST BEATEN THE GOD DAMN CHIEFS?!? Or even the Dolphins on TNF? Damn it.

The Bills now sit at 6-5 and still only have a 4% or so chance of making the playoffs. They still have more questions than answers but the season isn't over yet.

The average Browns come into town giving us, the fans, an important game after Thanksgiving. Rare. If the Bills go 7-5 despite the math you still have a season. Even if the odds are against it who cares, beat Brian Couch errr Hoyer, surprise the old ass Broncos sneak up on the Packers and.. nevermind.

At least we don't have to talk only about extending Marcell Dareus' contract, restructuring Mario's deal, low balling Hughes and 2nd round quarterbacks yet at least, amirite?

Jets at Bills at Detroit Preview

I still don't believe the Bills game couldn't have been played in Buffalo on Monday night or even Tuesday night but oh well, "mother nature" wins and the Bills get screwed again.  True, the game doesn't mean all that much because the odds Buffalo makes the playoffs are single digits at best.  Still it sucks.

The game does have some meaning though.  The Bills theoretically could still go 11-5 amirite?  Plus, if the Bills lose to the lowly Jets a month after throttling them on the road it will be a final verdict on many things.

For starters it will be the end of Kyle Orton as any kind of "quarterback of the future".  EJ Manuel might as well play out the string if the Bills go L, L, L vs KC Miami and NYJ jesus christ.

It would also be an indictment not only on moron Nate Hackett but the entire coaching staff and especially loser Doug Marrone.  To start out the season 5-3, go into your bye and then come out 0-3 would be grounds for a firing.  It would be inexcusable regardless of the circumstances of the past week.

One game, yes anything can happen, but three straight must win games and you don't go for broke, go guns a blazin', stop punting, trick plays, risky decisions anything St Doug?!?  WTF? Do you not realize you are coaching for your job and, likely, career? There is no worldly chance this moron gets hired as a head coach again if he gets fired by the Bills this year (granted some how Mike Mularchuck-Mularkey did get hired again [albeit Jacksonville doesn't really count and that was only one year]).  Plus Marrone was never fuckin qualified to be an NFL head coach any way.

Not only will everyone have lost faith in the QB and coach but the GM will lose most if not all confidence anyone had in him.  Doug Whaley has made some good moves, granted, but the whole operation seems to be lacking vision.  Was Manuel truly seen as the franchise quarterback all offseason?  Why was he benched after four games then?  Were the GM and coach even god damn communicating?  Why did it take until the end of August to realize Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel and Dennis Dixon were not adequate backup QBs?

Why would you trade away next year's 1st and 4th round picks for a really good WR when, clearly, the entire WR class was uber-talented and deep?  Did Whaley trade up for him to improve the lackluster QB play, the entire offense, the entire franchise or was it just a "big splash" just to make a move?

Yes, one game or even ten are not a big enough sample size to have a final verdict on the Watkins trade but it sure isn't looking good from ANY angle.  Say the Bills finish 7-9 (as I predicted [and seems likely]) then the Bills would have drafted around 15th.  You are telling me you wouldn't rather have say Odel Beckham Jr [or maybe just trade up 2 spots and get Mike Evans] or Kelvin Benjamin and a Jarvis Jones or Dre Kirkpatrick esque talent with that extra pick instead of JUST Watkins?  Then you are lying.

I don't see the Bills winning this week.  The Jets have a better head coach and will want revenge for the embarrassment of a few weeks ago.  The season will be over, another rebuild will be upon us and there is still no franchise QB any where in sight.  Ouch. (or just beat the shitty Jets again, roll over a deflated Browns and you have a season again).

Aaron Williams, a Genius?

by Steve

Haha, how did I miss this from Monday?

"“It’s been too many times where … we don’t take chances,” safety Aaron Williams said. “I feel like teams around this league, the reason why they’re successful most times, is because they do take chances and they are confident about their defense going out there and making three stops at midfield, or even, heck, at the 20-yard line. I encourage Coach to be aggressive and just believe in the defense.”

“I tell myself this and I joke about it, but sometimes I really mean it, I feel like if we can’t make a fourth and 1, we shouldn’t be able to win that game,” he said. “Fourth and 1 is literally just taking one step. It’s all about ‘want to,’ and the attitude of wanting to get that first down or wanting to make that stop if they don’t get a first down.”"

BOOM ROASTED St Doug! That isn't some fake twitter account that is one of the defensive leaders and highest paid players on the Bills, Aaron Williams!  If players are saying this publicly what do you think they are saying when the media isn't around?

It probably doesn't matter much at this point because the playoffs are now a myth and Marrone will be fired after the season.  But what the hell has to happen for St Doug to fucking wake up and realize he has to do something different to change the trajectory of this season and his career.  I'm thinking something like Riverboat Ron last year changing course and the Panthers going on a tear.

Marrone was a joke from the beginning but at least some of the players are starting to speak out and rip this clown.

Week 12 Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After two L's in 5 days lets see where the Bills are ranked:

ESPN 19:
"Kyle Orton was 5-of-13 for 47 yards and a sack against the Dolphins' blitz Thursday. The Jets, who blitz on one-third of dropbacks, will likely follow suit."

Orton is still the starting QB? Ouch.

CBS 18;
"Why are they sticking with Kyle Orton? There's nothing to gain from it."

Three spot drop and Prisco has given up on Orton

NFL 19:
"A lot of big plays were left out on the field in Miami, and you better believe the Bills know it. Dropped interceptions, missed receivers and a couple of close calls that went the Dolphins' way come to mind. We recommended that Bills fans hit up Lasertron a couple of weeks ago, but after Thursday's loss, I would advise grabbing a refreshment at Ulrich's Tavern. That place was around 100 years before fans were getting depressed about the "same old Bills."

Truth.

Yahoo 18:
"Nobody checked the expiration date on Kyle Orton. It has passed."

Orton has evidently died. Oh well.

PFT 19:
"19. Buffalo Bills (No. 16; 5-5):  Broncos fans may be able to send a few “Orton Hears a Boo” signs to Buffalo."

Ugh Orton does suck.

Walterfootball 23:
"23. Buffalo Bills (5-5) - Previously: #19 - So... can we finally stop pretending that the Bills are a good team? Yeah? OK, cool."

Highest 18 lowest 23.  Basically Orton sucks big time and everyone knows it.

Week 11 Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After a devastating awful loss to the Chiefs at home, where does the national media have the Bills:

ESPN :

CBS 17:
"At 5-4, they play a huge one Thursday against the Dolphins in Miami. It's sort of an elimination game."

Not much from Pete, one spot behind the Dolphins.

Yahoo 17 :
"They played well enough to win, but if you're going to break a playoff drought that dates back to 1999, you have to actually win. I don't know how they get to 10 wins now, and nine won't be enough."

Some real talk! Only a one spot drop though.

PFT  16:
"For coach Doug Marrone, Thursday night’s game against the Dolphins is a little like the sales contest in Glengarry Glen Ross."

Two spot regression but ahead of the Dolphins with a fresh movie reset.

The Bills go Bills and Give Game to the Chiefs

By Steve

Not a lot of Kyle Orton contract extension talk today is there. Not that Orton was the main reason the Bills lost yet again to the average Chiefs at home in a must have game though.

The Bills just about dominated Kansas City yet some how only managed 13 points and allowed 14 fourth quarter death knell points. Holy shit lets count the plays that cost them the game. If any of these plays didn't happen there is little doubt the Bills lose.

Bryce Brown fumbles the ball going into the endzone. Not only did he fumble but the ball bounced right towards idiot Scott Chandler and of course he couldnt simply pick it up for a TD.

The Chiefs punt yet again mid way through the 4th qt and instead of just fair catching it or taking a few yards and go down Leodis McKelvin fumbles deep in his own territory. If it didn't happen I would have been surprised.

4th and inches near mid field. Instead of actually trying to snap the ball and get a foot St Doug outsmarts no one, the Bills were called for a false start and the Bills punt instead.

Orton has mutiple chances to score at the Kc 15 after an easy first down. Incomplete Incomplete Incomplete Incomplete. The Bills of course give up a first down, game over.

It is amazing that the Bills lost this game. They didnt score a TD in four red zone chances, they live and love to punt on 4th and 1, and always give up a dagger when they need too. Why didn't someone call a time out on the 4th and 1 Jamaal Charles easily converted and waltzed into the endzone. WTF?

The season may or may not be over but what does it matter. They aren't making the playoffs this season. The coach is a loser the quarterback is a mediocrity and the team will seemingly never wash the stink off them from nearly a decade and a half of failure.

The only option, besides Brady and Belichick retiring or an Andrew Luck esque QB magically showing up, is a real coach with new ideas or a winner like Jim Harbaugh.
Maybe next year.

Chiefs at Bills Statistical Analysis

by Steve

The 5-3 Chiefs come into the Ralph to face the 5-3 Bills in arguably the best game of the week. Maybe.  No one believes in Buffalo and the Chiefs seemingly have the hardest schedule in the league down the stretch.  The Bills are coming off their bye week but interestingly teams are 4-10 straight up and 5-8-1 against the spread after their bye week!

Week 10 Bills Power Rankings Compilation

Coming off the bye week where does the national media have the Buffalo Bills ranked:

ESPN 18:
"Here are the quarterbacks with more touchdowns per game than Kyle Orton: Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. That's it."

Orton stats!  But a two spot drop after being idle for the week. Hmm

CBS 14:
"They come off their bye with a 5-3 record and a real chance to make a playoff push. Credit goes to Doug Marrone for going to Kyle Orton."

A four spot jump after not playing. The Bills are behind the Dolphins but ahead of the Chargers.

Yahoo 16:
"The Chiefs game at home this week is a nice test, for both teams really."

The Bills play the Chiefs this week evidently. But by not playing the Bills moved back a spot.

PFT 14:
"With games against the Chiefs and Dolphins four days apart, it’ll soon be obvious whether the Bills are in position to contend."

No movement this week but someone that looks ahead beyond just this week.

NFL 14:
"What did Bills fans do in the bye week? Play dominoes? Go to Lasertron? Watch the 1981 AFC wild-card triumph on VHS? (Confession: I have that.) Did you know one of the Bills' starting safeties in that '81 playoff game, Steve Freeman, is now an NFL game official? Yes, I am running out of things to write about here."

Two spot move up and a reference to a game from 34 years ago.

Walterfootball 18. Buffalo Bills (5-3). Previously: #21 :

No comments from Walt but evidently not seeing the Bills for a week allowed him to forget his hatred at least!

Three guys have the Bills at 14 two at 18 and the rest in the middle.  Still not a ton of respect overall.

Buffalo Bills hit the BYE at 5-3 Podcast

Midway point of the season, let's see what Steve and Coast have to say:

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Week 9 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After a resounding victory over the Jets do the Bills get any respect from the national media?

ESPN 16:
"The Jets blitzed Kyle Orton at the highest rate of Orton's season Sunday, and Orton finished 6-of-8 for 184 yards and three touchdowns against at least five rushers."

No movement from ESPN but some what useful stat about Orton.

CBS 20:
"Kyle Orton has really helped this team. Can he keep it up?"

A giant 2 spot leap but still behind the Dolphins, Giants and Steelers.  Kyle Orton is the QB evidently too

Yahoo 15:
"Kyle Orton's production is huge for the Bills, and it really shows how bad E.J. Manuel was before he was benched."

No change in their ranking and a nice shot at ol' Erik Manuel

PFT 14:
"14. Buffalo Bills (No. 14; 5-3):  Sammy Watkins‘ premature celebration could end up being a metaphor for his team’s 2014 season."

This hurts because it is true.  Again no change.

NFL 16:
"Buffalo fans tweeted me last week to say they didn't know which Kyle Orton they would get drive to drive, much less week to week. I think the Bills Mafia will take four touchdowns and no picks. In other news, Sammy Watkins pulled a Leon Lett, and appropriately got Beebe'd. #footballgods"

Another unchanged ranking and a nice Super Bowl 27 (or 28) reset

Walterfootball 21:
21. Buffalo Bills (5-3). Previously: #22

No comments from Walt this week but the Bills are behind 2 teams they've beat but ahead of the Browns!

Overall no one thought the win over the Jets was important.  But if you knew the history you were think it meant something.  The Jets do suck though.  Highest 14 lowest 21

Bills at Jets - Season on the line

-Coast

This whole week I have been afraid of this game vs. the Jets. I predicted a 23-13 Jets win. As the days go by, I am starting to wonder why I am afraid of the Jets? The only logical reason is that they are the Jets and we are the Bills and Rex Ryan owns us and we just cannot win in New York, or in any big game vs. this team. This is 2014 though and this Jets team is 1-6. They lost to the Lions and Bears at home, both teams the Bills defeated on the road. The Jets beat Oakland by 5 at home for their only win and lost 31-0 to San Diego. They have been simply awful and now that they have played 2 tough games in a row both of which they lost, they are the best 1-6 team ever. The Jets are the first team in the history of the league to be favored against a team with a winning record, which says about as much about the Bills as it does about the Jets.

The Bills are a Jay Cutler interception, Alex Henery missed field goals and Kyle Orton 4th and 20 away from being 1-6 themselves. How much is really separating this Bills team from the 1-6 Jets? The answer is...not much.

Offensively, the Bills rank 27th and the Jets 28th in points per game. The Bills are 22nd in the league in yards per game, the Jets 26th. Statistically speaking, both teams have been awful on offense (though with Orton in there, the Bills passing offense has been dramatically improved the last three games...running the ball is another story).

Defensively, the Bills have fared much better in points per game allowed (10th vs. 26th), but the Jets are actually allowing fewer yards per game (ranking 8th vs. the Bills 10th). The Jets defense is getting a pass for allowing so many points because they have faced such difficult competition this far. This is part of the reason why the media loves the Jets this week. They are 1-6 but have faced such great quarterbacks. They have faced Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Rivers, Cutler and Stafford. What people are not considering is that the Bills have faced 4 of those 6 players as well. The Bills have beaten Cutler and Stafford and faced Brady and Rivers. The Bills schedule hasn't exactly been a cake walk is all I am saying.

At the end of the day, these teams are even and given the history of this rivalry the past few years, it is hard to predict a Bills win. In 2008, the Bills were 5-1, lost to Miami and then came home to face off against Brett Favre and the Jets in the "biggest Bills game of the new millenium." The Jets wiped the floor with the Bills in what effectively ended their season. In 2011, the Bills were 5-2 and the Jets were in town with Rex Ryan for the "biggest Bills game of the new millenium." Rex Ryan owned the Bills and completely exposed Fitzpatrick and the offense and Ladainian Tomlinson flashed back to 2005 and ran all over the Bills defense. Those two games were the last two times the Bills faced the Jets with a winning record in which they were having legitimate playoff aspirations (ironically - both of those losses were the 8th game of the season as well). The Jets squashed them and anyone who really knew anything about the Bills knew those respective seasons were over.

The Bills have an opportunity Sunday to make a statement as the 2nd best team in the AFC East and the Patriots number 1 contender. In my opinion, the entire 2014 season rides on this Sunday's game. This is a must win if the Bills want to entertain any realistic playoff opportunities. The next 4 games are KC at home, at Miami, Jets at home and Cleveland at home. A loss vs. the Jets means the Bills absolutely must win the next 4 games (they will likely be dogs vs. KC and at Miami). And EVEN IF they do pull of 4 straights wins to get to 8-4, they will most likely need to win 2 of their last 4. GIving them a win vs. Oakland on the road means they have to win a game at Denver, vs. Green Bay or at New England. Is that really going to happen? Needless to say, a win vs. the Jets is a must but I need to stick to my original 23-13 prediction.

Go Bills!

Week 8 Bills Power Rankings Compilation

After a lucky win against the Vikings lets see what the natty media thinks:

ESPN 16:
"Kyle Orton has two game-winning drives in his three starts this season but running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller will miss time with injuries."

Boring words but a five spot move up

CBS 20:
"At 4-3, they are in the playoff race. But the backfield injuries will hurt."

A lot of running back chatter already this week and little respect paid with a 2 spot leap.

NFL 16:
"Now that is how you get your first-round draft pick involved, folks. Sure, Sunday's game was bugly (Buffalo ugly). But hey, man -- a win is a win is a win. I got on this team for the manner in which it was able to prevail in Detroit in Week 5 (via some nice, old-fashioned luck), but in the triumph over the Vikings, Kyle Orton -- sans 'stache -- was able to put a couple of throws right where they needed to be. Let's just hope Bryce Brown, Anthony Dixon and whichever Turd Ferguson the Bills sign off the street can provide balance on the ground in the absence of Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller."

A new word! Bugly. It fits.

PFT 14:
"The Bills will face Percy Harvin at the worst possible time — when he’s on his best behavior and without any idea how he’ll be used.:

I'm evidently not the only one a bit scared of Harvin this week. Two spot hop.

Yahoo 15:
"The Bills gave up a fourth-round pick for Bryce Brown, just to have him be inactive for seven weeks. With Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller hurt, we'll get to see if the Bills' investment was actually worth anything."

Lotta running back chatter. Bryce Brown time with a 3 spot leap.

Week 7 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings Compilation

Lets see what the media thinks about the 3-3 Buffalo Bills:

ESPN 21:
"Revis Island was a lonely place. Sammy Watkins had career lows in catches (two) and targets (three) Sunday, but the Vikings' defense should be good for a bounce-back performance."

Someone watched the game or at least the stats and the schedule. A small three spot drop.

CBS 22:
"The new owner got off to a tough start with a bad home loss. They just aren't good enough to beat the Patriots."

Pegula crack back and a true statement with a three spot drop seems appropriate.

PFT 16:
"So much for the Bills being competitive."
Huh?

NFL.com 21:
"Fielded many complaints about Buffalo being too low in last week's Power Rankings, but the thought here was that the club reached (and knee-jerked) with Kyle Orton -- and, generally, was not playing all that well. Well, the offense does look better with Orton under center. But while I understand gripes about the Bills being lower than the Lions and Bears (both of whom Buffalo beat), both of those teams won in convincing fashion Sunday and are still better at pro football's most important position -- quarterback. What we need to see from Doug Marrone's team is consistency, even if it is just for two games in a row."

You know someone messed up a week ago if you move up a spot after a bad home L.

Yahoo 18:
"Like the Cordarrelle Patterson situation, the Bills are well aware how many touches they give to C.J. Spiller. And at some point, you have to wonder what's wrong with Spiller that the Bills don't want to involve him more."

Good question, I'd add Watkins.

Walterfootball 24:
"What I wrote last week: "I have a feeling that Buffalo fans will be the next group of people to flood my comment board now that the Cincinnati backers have been silenced."

Sure enough, Buffalo backers pounced on the comment board below even though I picked the Bills both in Weeks 5 and 6. Buffalo ended up costing me four units, but the silver lining is that the team's annoying homers can shut up until the team's next bogus victory."

U Mad Bro? Why would you bet on the Bills when you are such a hater?

New Owner, Same Result - Pats outsmart Bills

-Coast

For the first time since the Brady Belichick era began, I went into a Bills Patriots game honestly thinking that the Bills had the better roster and were the more talented team. What a fool I feel like now. The Patriots have the greatest quarterback of all time and the greatest coach of all time. The Bills have Kyle Orton who they picked up 6 weeks ago and Doug Marrone, who is starting to show that maybe he really just is not good enough to coach in this league.

When I think back at yesterday’s game, the main reason for the loss is the coaching. The Patriots were better prepared, seemingly knew what we were going to do on defense at all times and just took it to the Bills. They made half time adjustments and scored on all 4 of their 2nd half possessions. The Bills on the other hand weren’t up to the challenge yet again.

Here are the major coaching errors that were the reason why the Bills lost in my opinion.

1.       The Bills made Mike Williams a healthy scratch. I don’t necessarily hate him not playing, but to look onto the field and see the recently promoted from the practice squad player Kenny Ladley out there on special teams, I just scratch my head. Who cares about special teams? The good teams don’t care about special teams. The good teams aren’t going to sit a player they traded for in order to allow more special teamers to suit up. Mike Williams has been starting for this team and now he is benched so we can have more special teamers available? I just do not agree with that.

2.       Sammy Watkins had 0 targets in the first half. Zero. Zilch. Nada. 2 first round picks to get a guy as good as Watkins presumably first and foremost for games like this one. Biggest game of the year vs. the New England Patriots. Everything the Bills do should be aimed at beating them. Sammy Watkins was a complete nonfactor. He was an afterthought. The Bills were resigned to ignoring him just because Revis was covering him. You know who knew how to get open vs. Revis? Steve Johnson. You know who threw the ball to Johnson when Revis was covering him? Ryan Fitzpatrick. You know who knew how to gameplan offensively to get Johnson the ball against Revis? Chan Gailey. And all this was before Revis ever get hurt and was in his prime.

3.       The end of the first half was laughable and honestly could have warranted being fired in itself. The Bills got the ball with inside 20 seconds left somewhere around their 30 yard line with 2 time outs. 2 15 yard pass plays and they are in field goal range. The first problem is they ran the ball which shows they weren’t even trying. What is the best case scenario if you run the football there? You get a 10 yard gain or so? Teams never break a run there. They were clearly trying to just run it out. Spiller of course fumbles and the Patriots get the ball at the 42 yard line with 0 timeouts and 6 seconds left. Ok, fine, just cover the sidelines, don’t do anything stupid and it’s 10-7 at halftime. Instead, the Bills defense allows 15 yard cushions on the outside, Edelman catches an easy out route to get into field goal range and Gostkowski nails it. 13-7 at halftime. 100% inexcusable.

4.       CJ Spiller’s use or lack thereof continues to mystify me. CJ Spiller cannot run the ball up the middle, I think we all have learned that by now. The Bills in general can’t but continue to beat a dead horse, which is a whole other issue. Why can’t we split this guy out and get him involved more in the passing game? Seeing what the Patriots do with far less talented players, it really makes you wonder what they could do with a guy like Spiller. You know who could get CJ Spiller involved and turn him into one of the premier young players in the entire league? Chan Gailey.

5.       The defense in the 2nd half was pathetic. Many of us have been hanging out hats on this defense being good week in and week out. Well, in 4 2nd half possessions the Patriots hung 24 points on them. Can’t do much worse than that. Brady was picking them apart, but even worse than that, was the last Patriots possession and the personnel that was on the field. Down 8 with New England starting at their own 7 yard line, the Bills had their 2 best pass rushers and 2 of their best players overall on the sidelines in Jerry Hughes and Mario Williams. Marrone admittedly thought they were going to run the football, which shows complete cluelessness about their opponent. The patriots couldn’t run the ball all day and are certainly not the type of team to just run the ball 3 times and punt when the game is in the hands of their hall of fame quarterback. Secondly, Hughes and Williams were on the sideline because of the rotation? Rotation? Are you serious? Is this Chan Gailey circa 2012 with the Jackson Spiller rotation? I don’t care about rotations. Game is on the line and you have two double digit sackers on the sideline including a guy who your franchise inked to a $100 million contract. Amateur stuff.

There are a few other things I want to mention about this game.

The officiating was terrible and seemingly consistently went in New England’s favor. Surprise Surprise. The Watkins pick offensive pass INT was one of the worst calls I have ever seen (though it did not hurt them). Worse was the Robert Woods push off. From all accounts, this was a very ticky tack call and is hardly ever called. Woods’ arms touched the DB but hardly pushed off. That was a 1st down and 10 from the NE 30 down by 9. With the penalty the Bills were backed up to their 40 and never could get their way into FG range, being forced to punt, and NE subsequently drove down to take a 30-14 lead. Without that penalty, the game is 23-17 at worst. That call completely changed the flow of the game.

Kyle Orton was good and in my opinion was borderline great in the 2nd half. He did have two turnovers in the first half, but come on, they did not decide the game. Quarterbacks turn it over so the people quick to point that out have it in for Orton from the get go. The game was 10-7 at the end of the second quarter and the Bills had the football despite the turnovers. Orton made many great throws in the game and the Bills passing game looked good in the 2nd half. I just wish they would use it more and run it less.

The Bills are still in this. They play the Vikings this week at home in a game they have to win, obviously. Then, the season rides on that Jets game. If they beat the Jets in NY to go to 5-3, I think they still have a shot given the Patriot’s much tougher schedule. If they lose to the Jets to go to 4-4, forget about it, throw in the towel, start planning how to use your 2nd round pick in May’s draft and let the coach/GM search begin.

Patriots at Bills Preview

By Steve

We all know what time it is. The Bills are ready for their bi-annual ass whooping by Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Cheatriots. Here we go again, right?

The Bills and New England have the same record 3-2, a top a weak AFC East. The Pats just throttled the Bengals in prime time and the Bills just won as 7 point dawgs at the Lions. Buf is 1-0 in division beating the Dolphins and N.E. is 0-1 with a loss to the same phins. Seemingly this game, if the names were different, would be a game the Bills would be favored.

But the Patriots are -3 because they are 24-2, twenty-four AND TWO in the last 13 seasons against the Bills. How is that possible? Well, for one, their qb has 3 rings and plays in championship games like I take shits (regularly) and our QB recently retired, smokes cigars and has a mustache.

Sure I wanted to pile on and say the cheatriots were done after losing badly to the Chiefs two weeks ago like everyone else. But I know better. I've been to more than half of those previous 26 games. I've been to Foxboro with my Fuck da Patriots shirt. I used to remember every defeat.

But after twenty or so defeats, the games have started to blend together. The Bills are close and choke, they blow big leads, they give just enough to dash our hopes. Sure the game at home in 2012 was euphoric but it was an outlier. It barely matters at this point.

Basically, I'm not burying the New Englanders until they are on fire with knives in their eyes their heart in my hand and heads on sticks Jason style. To be the man you have to beat the man.

Despite a nice win last week, a seemingly solid defense and a few playmakers on offense I dont have faith. QB v QB, coach v coach both huge advantages for NE.

When the Bills can run Belichick stacks the box, when the Bills can pass they blitz. When the Bills secondary owns, running backs I barely know have 100 yard games, when we have a solid front seven, receivers run buck wild in the secondary. Basically, they figure it out, adjust and beat us.

Sorry, I can't predict a win. With a win the scene will be better than in '12 but even if they lose the season isn't over.

The Bills have the easiest schedule in the league left based on winning %. The Patriots after the Jets (on Thursday) face Cutlet, Manning, Luck, Rodgers and Rivers in a row! So its not a must win but it is the biggest game of the season and could turn the tide on a 14 year playoff drought.

29-24 Cheatriots.

Buffalo Sabres 2014/15 Season Preview

By Steve

Is it June 2015 yet? Thats when the draft is right? Is anyone really anticipating this season with much fervor other than for a desire for the team to lose? (Well besides moron fanboy homers)

Then again I'm not totally convinced this team will be horrendous. Whilst the head coach is a moronic neanderthal who hates analytics, he does have a history of getting more out of less. That is concerning but the team was sooo bad last year it is difficult to fathom the team improving so much they aren't high in the lottery next year. Or is it?

Tim Murray is super cereal and knows he needs top end talent (of which the Sabres have little, at least on offense). The way to get top end talent is luck or high draft picks (as long as you don't look at Edmonton). But why did he bring in some whily old vets that have some talent?

I fear the team will be mediocre this year. Nothing will be worse than if the Buffalo Sabres (and the Islanders [ and the Blues for that matter]) are mediocre or better. Drafting 8th will not bring in a perennial All Star center. Drafting top 3 will.

The lemmings who buy hockey tickets around here will continue to any way so fuck em. Lose, lose, lose! I dont care if it is boring, pathetic or embarrassing. Finishing 10th is any way and it is worse.

For the love of god Nolan, do your job and lose. Then quit at the end of the season, find a young analytics-minded head coach and become a real NHL team in 15/16. Leggo

Prediction: Sabres finish 14th in the conference and will draft 5th.

Week 6 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings Compilation

Lets take a look at what everyone thinks about the Bills after their second win as a 7+ point road dawg:

ESPN 18:
"This week's edition of "just like everyone expected" -- down 14 on the road, Kyle Orton and the Bills rattled off 17 straight points for a big win in Detroit."

Five point jump and a meaningless comment.  How are the lines 12th though?

CBS 19:
"Kyle Orton is 1-0 as the starter. Now comes a big one against the Patriots for the division lead."
Petesy Prisco has always been a hater only moving the Bills up four spots and he has the Lions five spots ahead of the Bills.  Oh and they play the Patriots this week.

NFL 22:
"What a performance by Kyle Orton in his first start for the Bills. Before the game, Ian Rapoport offered up some odd intel about Orton's departure from Dallas. We're guessing Tony Romo did not endorse Orton on LinkedIn."

The Bills move up one spot and are behind not one not two but three teams they've already beaten. HUH?????

Yahoo! 16:
"Kyle Orton played well, and he'll have a few games like that. Next week's home game against New England is big for a Week 6 tilt."

Another non believer seemingly although Buffalo was moved up eight spots.

PFT 14:
"Yes, sometimes the difference between winning and losing is the other team having a really crappy kicker"

not much credit but at least they are ahead if the Lions after beating them on the road.

Walterfootball 26:
" I have a feeling that Buffalo fans will be the next group of people to flood my comment board now that the Cincinnati backers have been silenced.

Speaking of angry people, Jim Schwartz may have finally been able to mellow out after beating his former team. I wanted to get Schwartz's reaction, so I sat down with him for an interview. Here's the transcript:

Me: Hey Jim, thanks for agreeing to the interview.

Schwartz: It's my pleasure, Walt. I've always sent tons of traffic your way, even when you were clamoring for my firing for several years. I love your work.

Me: Aww, thanks, Jim! Anyway, I was wondering how you feel about beating your former team.

Schwartz: It feels great, Walt. It's better than any sex or high I've experienced.

Me: That's great. So, how did you stymie Matthew Stafford, exactly? He struggled mightily, though I suppose Calvin Johnson's injury hurt him.

Schwartz: Yeah, that was an easy one. I snuck into Calvin Johnson's house the night before and bashed his foot with a hammer. I then knocked him unconscious so he wouldn't remember anything.

Me: Wow, that's pretty extreme.

Schwartz: Meh, it's OK. I also needed their kicker Alex Henery to screw up, so I kidnapped his wife and kids and told him that I'd decapitate them if he made any field goals.

Me: Uhh... that's kind of not cool.

Schwartz: Not cool? Those a**holes ran me out of town, Walt. The fans need to get their just desserts as well. That's why I've planted a dozen bombs around Detroit, and they're all set to go off sometime this week.

Me: Bombs!? Hold on, I'm getting a call.

Schwartz: Put down the phone, Walt. I saw you dial 9-1-1.

Me: No, I didn't, I swear!

Schwartz: You know too much. Prepare to meet my hammer of doom!

Me: No, Jim, put down the hammer, Jim! Put it down, Jim, put it down!!! "

You can always count on Walterfootball to pile on the hate even if he isn't very funny. Ha

MLB Total Wins Prediction Review

by Steve

Back in March I predicted the win totals of all 30 MLB teams, NL and AL, lets see how I did:

American League
East
4-1 with my only wrong prediction being the Orioles.

Central
3-1-1 the Tigers were at exactly 90 wins and I was off on the Royals

West
3-1-1 again, the A's were exactly at 88 and Seattle surprised me.

National League
East
2-3 only ones I got right are the Nattys and Phillies

Central
3-2 the Reds let me down and the Brewers were hot early.

West
3-2, Dodgers won by half a win and the Diamondbacks were atrocious.

In total 18-10-2!! Call me a genius, thank you see you next year!

Bills at Lions Preview Podcast

Steve and Coast review the disaster that was the Texans game and breakdown the decision to bench EJ Manuel for Kyle Orton. Ohhh and look forward to the Detroit Lions

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Week 5 Buffalo Bills Power Rankings

What the expert power rankers are saying:

ESPN 23:
"EJ Manuel was 5-of-18 for 36 yards and two interceptions against at least five rushers Sunday. Manuel has a 2.3 Total QBR against the blitz this year (53.1 last year)."
Four spot drop and some useless Erik Manuel stats

CBS 23:
"The Bills have lost two straight and now must take a tough road trip to Detroit. Is it a trip back to reality?"
Another 4 spot drop and I have no clue what that comment means.  Weren't the last 2 games a trip back to reality already?

Yahoo 24:
"I don't agree with benching EJ Manuel. If it's close (and while Manuel hasn't been good, we all know Kyle Orton won't be good either), then you go with the young guy and hope he improves. There's no upside with Orton, now or later."

6 spot plunge but some actual insight and opinion.  Why do all the local guys love the qb change and the national guys hate it?
NFL.com :

Walterfootball 28:
" - The Twitter account @buffalorumblings summed up the Bills' season quite well in a single tweet:

"I think it needs to be said: Kyle Orton was signed less than a month ago and fans are CLAMORING to see what he's got. Says a lot.""

Only a two spot drop and a tweet from a rival, ouch.

PFT 21:
"Quarterback change now, coaching change later."
No faith in Kyle Orton or Doug Marrone.. hmm 3 spot drop but the highest of any other site.

NFL.com 23:
"Massive drop, based on consecutive uninspired performances and the sudden decision to bail on EJ Manuel. While I understand the coaching staff's position, I have my own take on what Buffalo is and isn't doing regarding its young quarterback -- click here to see what it is.

The Bills' defense has certainly played well enough to win. They have allowed opponents to post just 16.5 offensive points per game -- so don't put J.J. Watt's great play (and Manuel's blunder) on them."

huge drop down twelve slots. And no i'm not clicking on your other links.

Bills end the EJ Manuel Era

By Steve

Sixteenth overall pick, fourteen starts, twenty games on an NFL roster, a novice head coach and offensive coordinator a .500 2014 record and Erik James Manuel career with the Buffalo Bills is over.

Can anyone picture a scenario where Manuel is ever the Bills starter again outside of injury? Benching Erik for Kyle "i dont want to play for Dallas so I'm going to retire [p.s. that happened in 2014]" Orton ends his career. Orton retired earlier this year, he wasn't on an NFL roster in late August and is about as athletic as Scott Chandler. Ouch.

Is four games and a 2-2 record really enough to bench your healthy QB you drafted in the first round two years ago? The move reeks of panic. Sure some players might be frustrated about the QB play but to say Manuel is the only reason the Bills lost Sunday in Houston is a lie.

The Texans knew that Fred Jackson swing pass was coming, the coach doesn't know how to use time outs or prepare his players to use time outs. The play calling is beyond confounding. At the end of the first half when the clock ran out, that sequence of decisions and play calls were nothing short of shocking. Sure passing to Bobby Woods was horrible but all the WRs ran routes within 5 yards of the line of scrimage. That won't change with a new QB.

Benching Manuel after 4 games because they lost by 6 points to Houston and lost to the Chargers is a fuckin joke.

Anyone that likes this decision cannot lie to themself and have faith in Marrone, Whaley and Russ Brandon. If they do they are in denial. Kyle Orton playing mediocre is not going to change the incompetence at the top of this organization.

Orton better be prepared to play. He better be fully invested in winning and being the starting quarterback for the next 26+ games. Otherwise, WTF are we doing?

Bills Texans Preview

by Coast

I am posting this the night before the game, so I will keep it short and sweet.

The Bills travel to Houston to take on the Texans in an AFC match up of two 2-1 teams. This is a MUST WIN football game if the Bills want to have legitimate playoff aspirations. You just cannot lose to a team that went 2-14 a year ago and is starting a quarterback that wasn’t even good enough to be on the Buffalo Bills.

I will start there, Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. EJ Manuel. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a better football player, simple as that. Ryan Fitzpatrick lacks the prototypical arm strength, size and athleticism that you want to see in a quarterback. But, if you don’t know how to use all those physical tools (I.e. EJ Manuel), then they don’t mean anything. The most important traits of a quarterback are intelligence and fearlessness. Intelligence - can you read the defense and get rid of the ball on time/not do anything stupid? Fearlessness - Will you try and get the first down and not slide unprovoked? Will you stand in the pocket and deliver a football without crumbling?

Ryan Fitzpatrick does not have the physical tools but he is without a doubt smart and fearless. Fitz has turned marginal at best talent into a  quality NFL career. He has lasted longer and has started more games than anyone could have guessed when he was drafted in the 7th round out of Harvard and for that he deserves some credit.

EJ Manuel on the other hand has no confidence, plays scared and is dumb as rocks. EJ runs out of bounds and goes down to avoid contact, before contact is even imminent. EJ crumbles in the face of the blitz. He doesn’t stand in the pocket and deliver passes knowing he is about to get hit. The coaches eliminate half of the football field on pass plays so he only needs to read half the field because they know reading the whole field is an impossibility. EJ back peddles into the end zone and then intentionally grounds the ball. EJ Manuel throws check downs with a minute left down 12 points. When he occasionally does make a good read, he throws the ball so inaccurately that his poor receivers are at risk of being decapitated.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is better than EJ Manuel and the Bills would be better with Fitz. Fitz outplaying EJ and the Bills losing Sunday would put this organization is a very precarious position. Fortunately for the Bills, Fitz could outplay EJ Sunday and the Bills could still win the football game because I believe they have the better overall football team. Or, the bad Fitz will show up and throw a few passes to the Bills. I will give the Bills credit on one thing. EJ Manuel being too scared and the Bills coaching being happy with him just running out of bounds and not trying to make plays has allowed him to limit the turnovers. This could come in handy against Fitz and a team that went 2-14 a year ago.

Enough about the QB - what about the Bills other “weapons” on offense? Last Sunday’s game against San Diego was not a good game for those in favor of the Sammy Watkins trade. On top of EJ Manuel sucking, Sammy Watkins was basically invisible AND he admittedly gave up on a play (I don’t blame him for looking after his general welfare at that point in the game). Watkins had 2 for 19 yards and 16 of those 19 yards came on the last drive once the game was over. His Clemson buddy CJ Spiller had 10 carries for 25 yards. His lack of success continues to be a head scratcher but  running a draw with him on 3rd and 1 is not setting him up for success.

The Bills offensive coaching sucks. Nate Hackett is way over his head, like we have been saying for, well, 19 games now.

I don’t know much about the Texans. I know they are 2-1 with wins over Washington and the Raiders. Their lone defeat came at the Giants a week ago. Nothing impressive about those two wins as Washington and the Raiders both suck. The Texans employ two really good receivers in veteran Andre Johnson and young budding star DeAndre Hopkins. The way the Bills secondary has performed so far this year, these two guys could give them a very hard time. Steph Gilmore needs to learn how to tackle. He is supposed to be a star but his tackling sucks. He actually whiffed on a tackle, then took a facemask penalty and injured himself on the same play. That is embarrassing. Helping this Bills this week is that starting running back Arian Foster is questionable for the game and might not play. This means the Bills will have to contend with Alfred Blue, the rookie 6th round draft pick.

The Texans do have the best defensive player in football, so I am looking forward to seeing how the Bills offense deals with JJ Watt. Other than Watt though, Houston’s defense hasn’t been too impressive, ranking 25th in yards per game allowed against the likes of RG III, Derek Carr and Eli Manning. No offence to Eli, but these guys aren’t exactly lighting the world on fire.

I don’t have much confidence in the Bills in this game. On the pod cast I predicted 23-16 Houston, so I am sticking to that. I hope for the sake of the pending media firestorm next week and for the sake of hell not breaking loose in Buffalo that EJ Manuel shows up and doesn’t let Ryan Fitzpatrick make Bills fans clamor for Ryan Fitzpatrick because they have completely given up hope on the former first round reach quarterback EJ Manuel.
